SNAKE RELATED VOCABULARY

AGLYPHOUS - (′a·glĕ′fŭs) - having solid teeth, lacking grooves
ALBINO - (al·bī′nō) - lacking black pigment or color
ANTERIOR - (ăn·tĕr′ē·er) - at the front, forward
CLOACA - (klō·ā′kŭ) - the posterior opening that serves as the only opening for the intestinal, urinary and reproductive tracts
CLUTCH - (klŭch) - the group of eggs laid at one time
COLD-BLOODED - (kōld′blŭd′ĭd) - a laymen's term referring to an animal that is ectothermic or poikilothermic
CONSTRICTION - (kŭn·strĭk′shĕn) - the method of some snakes to kill their prey by wrapping themselves around the prey and squeezing
DENTITION - (den·tish′ĕn) - the number, kind and arrangement of teeth
DERMAL - (dûr′mel) - of the skin
DORSAL - (dôr′sel) - on the back
ECDYSIS - (ĕk′dĕ·sĭs) - the shedding of skin
ECTOTHERMIC - (ĕk′tō′thûr·mĭk) - control of body temperature through external means
EGG - (ĕg) - the object produced by the mating process that contains a developing embryo(baby)
FANGS - (fāngs) - the long sharp hollow/grooved teeth of a venomous snake
FORKED-TONGUE - (fôrkt-tŭng) - a tongue that is split into two distinct ends at the tip
HATCH - (hăch) - to bring forth young from a egg
HEMOLYTIC - (hē′mō·lĭ·tĭk) - destroying blood cells HISS - (hĭs) - the sound snakes make as a warning
IMBRICATING - (ĭm′brĕ·kāt·ing) - overlapping evenly
INCUBATION - (ĭn′kyĕ·bā′shĕn) - maintaining conditions that favor optimal growth and development of an embryo
INCUBATOR - (ĭn′kyĕ·bā′tōr) - a device used to incubate eggs
LITTER - (lĭt′er) - the group of young born at the same time
LONGEVITY - (lŏn·jĕv′ĕ·tē) - the length of life
MORPHS - (môrf) - color variations
NEUROTOXIC - (noo′rō·tŏk·sĭk) - detroying nerves or nerve tissue
OCULAR SCALE - (ŏk′yū·ler skāl) - the layer of transparent, immovable disc-shaped skin covering the eye for protection, also known as the eye cap
OPHIOLOGIST - (ŏ′fē·ŏ′lĕ·jĭst)- someone who studies snakes OPHIOLOGY - (ŏ′fē·ŏ′lĕ·jē) - the branch of zoology dealing with snakes
OPHIOPHAGOUS - (ō′fē·ŏ·fŭ·gŭs) - feeding on snakes
OPISTHOGLYPHOUS - (ō′pĭs·thō·glī·fŭs) - rearward grooved teeth, rear-fanged
OVIPAROUS - (ō·vĭp′er·ŭs) - producing eggs that mature and hatch outside the body, egg-laying
OVOVIVIPAROUS - (ō′vō·vī·vĭp′er·ŭs) - producing eggs that are incubated and hatched within the parent's body
POIKILOTHERMIC - (pōĭ′kĕ·lō·thû r′mĭk) - the changing of internal body temperature in relation to the surrounding atmosphere
POSTERIOR - (pōs·tĭr′ē·er) - at the rear, rearward
PROTEROGLYPHOUS - (prō′ter·ō·glī·fŭs)- forward grooved teeth, forward-fanged
REPTILE - (rĕp′tīl) - any animal that is of the class Reptilia SCALE - (skāl) - a small rigid plate that grows out of an animal's skin to provide protection
SHED - (shĕd) - to remove loose skin
SNAKE - (snāk) - any of numerous species and genera of scaly, legless reptiles (order or suborder Serpentes) with long, slim bodies and tapering tails SOLENOGLYPHOUS - (sŏ′lĕ·nō·glī·fŭs) - pipe grooved teeth
SQUAMATA - (skwŏ·mŏ′tŭ) - the scaled reptiles
S-SHAPED - (ĕs-shāpt) - the formation of the neck and anterior part of a snake when ready to stirke
STRIKE - (strīk) - an attack, an attempted attack or a warning given by a snake
SUBSTRATE - (sŭb′strāt) - any of various materials such as wood shaving, sand, coconut husk, etc. placed at the bottom of a terrarium
TERRARIUM - (tĕ·râr′ē·ĕm) - a small enclosure for land animals simulating their natural habitat
UBIQUITOUS - (yoo·bĭk′wĕ·tŭs) - present or seeming to be present everywhere at the same time
VENOM - (vĕn′ŭm) - the toxin produced by some animals
VENOMOUS - (vĕn′ŭm·ŭs) - having glands that secrete venom
VENTRAL - (vĕn′trĕl) - on the belly or abdomen
VIVARIUM - (vī·vār′ē·ŭm) - a small enclosure for land or water animals simulating their natual habitat
VIVIPAROUS - (vī·vĭp′er·ŭs) - giving birth to live young
